IS 7089 — The Indian Standard Explained

Choosing the Right Colour
Indian electrical standards (IS 694) specify colour coding for electrical wiring. Using the correct colour tape is essential for safety, identification and compliance:
- Red — Phase/Live wire (single phase installations)
- Black — Neutral wire, earth bonding, general insulation
- Blue — Neutral in 3-phase systems, cold water pipes

How to Apply FR PVC Tape Correctly
- Ensure the wire/cable surface is clean and dry before taping
- Start at one end of the joint or splice — overlap the existing insulation by at least 20mm
- Apply with 50% overlap between each pass for maximum insulation
- Stretch the tape slightly as you wrap for a tight, gap-free finish
- Extend at least 20mm beyond the joint at the other end
- Press the final end firmly to prevent lifting
